The burial place of Captain John McGee is in the middle of a 255 acre farm, about 300 yards from the house of the owner. He is buried under a tree with a lot of big rocks around. Grown over for many years and almost impossible to walk into the area. It is in Julian, Guilford Co., NC. John gave 1/2 acre for the cemetery. The owner feels sure there is a grave marker for him but it cannot be seen. Capt. John McGee, merchant, wrote his will 2 November 1773. He identified himself as being of "Guilford County." Randolph was a part of the original Guilford County. He died December 13, 1773. The original will is on file in the Office of the Secretary of State in Raleigh and may be found in "North Carolina Wills 1663-1789". Book XIX, page 49, (SS 857). The Will of John McGee of Guilford Co., NC.(Col. John McGee who married Martha McFarlane) dated Nov 22, 1773, proved Jan 20, 1774 (or Jan 28, 1774) is found in the North Caroline Archives. North Carolina Wills, 1663-1789, Vol. XIX, p. 49, folios 1, 2, 3, names his children as: John (married Martha Johnson/Johnston), Nancy (married Robert Lindsey); Jean (married John Wilborn), Susanna (married Elisha Mendenhall) , Andrew (said to have lived in Maryland); William (b. 1765, married Anna King May 1796); and Samuel. Col. John McGee's 1st wifewas the mother of the two oldest children, Samuel & Nancy. He lived on the waters of Sandy Creek, in the north side of Randolph County, where he owned large quantities of valuable land, mill, & c. He also kept a country store and was a man of more business than any other in that part of the country. About the beginning of the war, or soon after, he died. 1) Colonel John McGee was a commissioned English officer and was recommended for Captain of Militia in 1755. He had come to America with his parents but his mother died on the voyage and was buried at sea. John and his widower father first lived in Maryland before coming to North Carolina. Colonel John McGee, who died in December 1773. He was a very prosperous land owner, and owned something over 5,000 acres at the tiem of his death.
