His father moved to Tennessee in 1825 and lived near the presentcity of LaGrange, Fayette County, Tenn. At the age of fourteen,family traditions say, Michael ran away from home, possibly withhis brothers James and George, and lived in Holmes or CarrollCounty, Miss. He married in Holmes County The Vardamans wereprominent planters in Mississippi and probably influenced muchof the business knowledge that Michael practiced in thefollowing years. He became a business success at an early agewhen, realizing that there was money to be made from thetremendous forests in Mississippi, he began purchasing timberrights in 1838 at the early age of 22. He became partners inthis venture with a John Claws in 1838, realizing a good profitwhile getting working capital in which to buy more land. Hepurchased the George W. Pollard home in Carrolton, Miss., andlived there and in Holmes County from 1839 to about 1848. Hemoved to Mississippi City, Harrison County, and lived thereuntil 1858 when he moved his family to Texas. In the fall of1858, Michael, along with his family, mother-in-law Sarah(Smith) Vardaman, and brother-in-law, William SylvesterVardaman, left Biloxi in three ships that they had purchased onwhich they brought about 30 slaves, their household goods, etc.,and lumber, already cut, to build a large two-story DutchColonial house. After landing at old Indianola, a flourishingseaport of that time, they came overland to Jackson County Theybought 1600 acres of land out of the William Whittaker League,east of the Navidad River, where they processed sugar andmolasses for commercial purposes. There was a large sugar houseon the east bank of the Navidad River, two large undergroundcisterns in which to cool molasses and large iron kettles withwide brims in which to cook the cane juice.The three ships weresold to a Mr. Robert W. Dunn in exchange for property on theBrazos River.
The Civil War started shortly after Michael came to Texas andhis dream of the sugar plantation never became a reality. InJuly of 1861, his three oldest sons enlisted in the ConfederateArmy. As more and more men were needed, Michael, although 47years old, joined the 24th Cavalry Brigade on 21 Sept 1863 atCamp Terry, Texas. His unit was captured on the 2nd of December1863 at Aransas Pass, Texas. He was sent to New Orleans but oneof his slaves, Nelse Dawson, who had gone with him, managed toescape the Yankees and returned home to tell the family what hadhappened. They were held in the attic of a home in New Orleanswhere the guard marched up and down before the opening, day andnight. One companion would sit by the opening and signal theothers when the guard reached the end of his beat so that theyhad time to scrape the bricks before the guard returned andcould hear the noise. After breaking through three walls, theyswam the Mississippi River and walked back to Texas. At theclose of the war, Michael found his property dissipated, hisslaves freed and his money worthless. The Vardamans sold theirhalf of the plantation and returned to Mississippi where one ofhis sons born in Texas, later became Governor (James K.Vardaman).
Michael was involved in several business ventures after the war.One was the exclusive agent for Franklin & Johnson Soap, alongwith manufacturing rights and another, the rights to manufacturea patented Bee Hive of J.F Van Horn. How well these venturesfared is not known but since this happened about 1878, it showsthat he never lost his interest in business even after the vastdisappointment of the war. Michael was appointed to the officeof Justice of the Peace and Constable of his precinct in 1878and served until 1880 when he was unable to run for electionbecause of his health. His wife, Sarah, died on 5 Nov 1878.Michael died shortly afterward on 23 Aug 1880 and they were bothburied on the Laughter plantation near Morales, Jackson County,Texas. He died without a will but left his property to his twoyoungest sons, Gideon and Robert, in exchange for their promiseto take care of his minor daughters, Tryphrene and EmmaGertrude. Michael died of consumption along with several of hissons who died within several years of each other.
