"Robert W. Lindsay (1735-1801) and John Lindsay (ca.1740-1812) were among the first settlers in west-central Deep River. They were brothers, and they purchased a large tract of land in the 1750s on the west prong of Deep River.... They were obviously men of some means and some formal education, and they built houses on opposite sides of the creek that were far above average for the time and place..... Robert Lindsay had legal training and was soon involved in political and judicial matters..." It goes on to talk about the founding of the county, and the court meeting at Robert Lindsay's house, and his service in the NC legislature in 1777 & 1778, and as presiding judge of the Guilford Court from 1781 to 1788. It says John Lindsay's house was similar to Robert's but a bit larger, and "is occupied today and in sound condition." (1980).
Robert and Nancy Ann had at least seven, possibly nine, children. They were:Samuel Lindsay (d.1814) m. Henrietta E. Causey in 1801, 6 children. Robert Lindsay, Jr. (1776-1818) m. Letitia Harper in 1803, 6 children.William Lindsay (c.1777-1841) m. Elisabeth Briggs in 1807, 7 children. Jane Lindsay (1779-1827) m. Jesse Hargrove in 1803, 8 children.Andrew Lindsay (1786-1844) m. Elizabeth Dick, 6 children. Susannah Lindsay (1789-1857) m. Dr. Joseph Wood, 4 children. David Lindsay (1793-1860) m. Sarah Dillon, 2 sons.
