OK, I talked at length with the church today. They had an addition to the Rosses--but probably not one that would help. Henry Clay Ross's wife was Jeana PINNIX, 22 Aug 1899 - 12 Dec 1985. Also, the Jane listed in the book was listed as a June in the church records.
The Rosses are probably connected, but are not buried near each other. They are all in the same section; Henry and Jeana are buried beside each other; (Section A, 196, 197) John W. is
in Section A, 356. John F. is in Section A, 215, buried beside.....Amanda P. Armfield (1820 - 04/1884). She is in lot 214, beside Joseph Armfield (6 May 1800 - 1 May 1892) (213).
Looks like your theory of John's father dying or divorcing may be correct. Unfortunately, that was the extent of the information readily available. They do have all the old church records in boxes which I can make an appointment to go through. The secretary there felt there was a strong possibility that the P. in Amanda's name stood for PINNIX or PORTER, as those are common names in that community, and the only "P's" in the cemetery.
Forsyth Co. was formed from part of Stokes in 1849, so I wonder if she didn't go back to the home of her childhood after his death. (Of course, Kernersville is only about 6 miles from the Lindsay plantation on Deep River, so it may be that she just moved to the nearest town....and two of her daughters and one son lived there.)
